Ο Paul Baumer είναι ένας νεαρός Γερμανός ο οποίος, αμέσως μετά την αποφοίτησή του απο το γυμνάσιο, μαζί με τους συμμαθητές του , κατατάσεται στο γερμανικό αυτοκρατορικό στρατό κατά την διάρκεια του Πρώτου Παγκόσμιου Πόλεμου. Αρχικά σκέφτεται ότι ο πόλεμος θα ήταν μια μεγάλη περιπέτεια, ο Paul και οι φίλοι του ανακαλύπτουν ακριβώς το αντίθετο, καθώς ο πόλεμος τραβά σε μάκρος και ένα προς ένα τα μέλη της τάξης του σκοτώνονταιι στη δράση έως ότου παραμένει μόνο ο Paul.
